As the school is undergoing renovation, Pei Chun has to move to a holding school. After interviewing some teachers, they agreed that some things need to be improved on.

The Facilities:

Mr Zhang Nan thinks that the library should have books which are easier to read as some students find the books quite difficult for them.

He also thinks that if classrooms had air-conditioning, it would be great for all but or course, it will be quite expensive and a waste of electricity.

Canteen:

Teachers also think that students would like more stalls to sell more varieties of food. They also trust that their teachers would support it. However, some teachers disagree as these items might cost more.

Changes in the New Site

Moving to the holding site this year meant there have been a lot of changes to our study environment.

One of the few changes that is very obviously different is the Library.  Now, instead of just a reading area and the usual shelves of books, we have a larger area for reading and there is even a place within the Library called ‘The Sanctuary’ which is like a study area for us to use after school.

Thanks to this new study room, we get to use an air-conditioned room for our own self-directed learning. We can do our revision, homework and other school related things without the worry of not having enough space when another class is in the Library.

We also have a lot of other rooms within the Library. One such room is the theater performance room which has a raised platform in it that acts  like a stage. The theater room was one room which fascinated a lot of people during the tour of the holding site.

Outside the library, we have some benches for some people who do really like the cold to do their work and relax.

We have more space outside to put our bags and as a result, we can have more space in the library.

Changes in the New Site

Our school shifted to the holding site this year as part of the PERI upgrading programme.  There are many changes in the new school, such as the field, the canteen and the library.  The school canteen is one area where many pupils spend a good part of their time.  Let us take a look at what the Uncle at store Number Two has to say.

“There is not much change in business, and the canteen is definitely smaller”, he said.

“I hope my business will not be worse and I hope pupils won’t get into falls and sustain other injuries due to the overcrowding,” he added.

Walking around the canteen, everyone would definitely notice a big difference – the Popular Bookshop.  In the old school, people could walk into the bookshop to choose the things they wanted to buy.  However, in the new school, people queue up and ‘order’ the things they want from a hatch. After that, they will have to queue up in a different line to pay and collect the items.  There is a disadvantage in this arrangement – there now has to be at least two people manning the bookshop – one will be the cashier, and the other will be the person who will pass the things ‘ordered’ to the buyers. This has led to long queues. Let’s hope we get a bit more efficient in organising this.

I do find that there is an increase in the variety of food sold this year. Some are so scrumptious that  many people eat them every day.  Stall 8 has new items such as pancakes and pao /大包子.  The tasty food served deserves a thumbs up.

On the flip side, I find that the canteen tables are dirty and some tables even have words carved on them.  The new school also has are more stairs, and that is a big problem for the people in wheelchairs or casts as they cannot move about easily.  Fortunately, there are lifts to be used.

A suggestion scheme was recently introduced to pupils. I hope we will continue to improve on the environment here so as to make our school experience a happy and memorable one.

Lee Jia Ying and Marius Sim from 5A interviewed Mr Zhang Nan about the traffic situation at our holding site.

Jia Ying: Mr Zhang, do you think it is more convenient to come to school in the mornings now that we are at our holding site?

Mr Zhang Nan: I think the traffic at the holding site is a bit heavy because there are lots of cars at the junction every morning.

Marius: How do you come to school?

Mr Zhang Nan: Sometimes, I take the public bus and sometimes I take a taxi to school.

Jia Ying: Are you living far away from school?

Mr Zhang Nan: Yes, quite far. I live in Yishun.

Marius: What time do you usually come to school?

Mr Zhang Nan: I come to school at about 7am.

Jia Ying and Marius: Thank You!

Mr Zhang Nan: You're welcome!

We interviewed some of our teachers and got different answers from them.

Mr Zhang says, “Protecting the environment is everyone’s responsibility. Being a student, even though our ability to do so is quite limited, we can still do our part. For example, we can remember to always turn off the taps tightly. If we notice a broken tap, we should report it immediately. We can collect used papers in the classroom. We can also minimize the amount of water flowing from the tap when washing the dishes to prevent wasting water.”

We all agreed that the most humorous answer came from our Art teacher, Mr Jonathan Soo,

“We can minimize the water used by going to the toilet fewer times each day!”

All our teachers think that we should promote events about protecting the environment. That way, students can learn more about what they can do.
